Basic Subject Cataloging Using LCSH Institute

CALA Executive Director and former Librarian at the University of
California, Irvine.

This all-day workshop will present catalogers with the basic principles and
foundations of subject cataloging using Library of Congress Subject
Headings (LCSH).  This workshop is developed under the auspices of
Cooperative Cataloging Training (CCT), a joint initiative of the Program
for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) and the Association for Library
Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS).  The course follow the model of
the Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program (SCCTP) in which highly
skilled and experienced catalogers develop and present standardized
training materials.

The workshop will include information on determining what a work is about,
the principles and structure of LCSH, and how to understand the elements of
subject authority records. The workshop also focuses on tools for subject
cataloging, applying chronological, topical, form and geographic
subdivisions, and using names as subjects.
