Collection Development Librarian, Assistant Unit Head

Hunter Library seeks an innovative Collection Development Librarian to provide leadership in acquiring library resources in a variety of formats and to assist in managing the Collection Development & Serials Unit.  This position will articulate the direction, balance and emphasis of collections, including monographs, serials, and electronic databases, as well as formulate policies.  The Collection Development Librarian will coordinate and support the work of the liaisons to academic departments in their efforts to develop collections in their areas, and will work with teaching faculty who are planning new programs or courses or preparing for accreditation visits.  Other duties include budget allocation and management, including projections and reports; monitoring publishing trends, both electronic and print; and cooperative collection development in the context of a three institution consortium. This librarian will play a key role in analyzing the use of library resources and assessing the collection.

This position is expected to work closely with the Head of Collection Development and Serials, to whom the position reports, as well as collaborate with the Cataloging/Acquisitions Unit.  The position will also act as liaison to one or more academic departments.  Hunter Library's size and culture allow for involvement in many areas and there is opportunity for providing bibliographic instruction and/or assistance at the reference desk, dependent upon expertise.  Library faculty are highly engaged in library planning and policy-making.

Required: A Masters of Library Science from an ALA accredited school and experience in collection development or acquisitions work.

Preferred: Experience in collection assessment including quantitative analysis, and as a liaison with teaching faculty; knowledge of automated systems; experience with budget projections, allocations and reports; good oral and written communication skills; planning and organizational skills; and an ability to work effectively with teaching faculty, students, library faculty and staff.

Minimum salary is $40,000.  Salary and rank commensurate with qualifications.  This is a twelve-month, tenure-track position with a generous 24 days of vacation leave annually.  Choice of retirement plans includes Fidelity, Lincoln, TIAA-CREF, VALIC, or the North Carolina State retirement system.

Hunter Library has a materials budget of 1.3 million which is expected to increase annually for the next 3-5 years.  It is a member of the Western North Carolina Library Network, a consortium of three universities sharing the Innovative Interfaces Inc. system and other services.
