It depends on how often you bind the magazine and how thick the magazine
is.  For example, Journal of Chemical Physics is thicker than JAMA.  I
usually try to figure for at least 3 years of growth.  I measure how
much space 1 years worth of volumes take up now, multiply it, and then
add a little.  Journals seem to be growing in size every time I turn
around, so it doesn't hurt to estimate a little high.
