ALCTS E-Forum Discussion on Publisher/Vendor Supplied Cataloging Records

For many years, libraries have acquired cataloging records directly from
publishers and vendors and the responsibility for copy cataloging or
cataloging upon receipt has shifted from the cataloging department to the
acquisitions department, resulting in new workflows.

The LC Working Group Report stated that much could be done to “increase the
efficiency of bibliographic production and maintenance” by “making use of
more bibliographic data earlier in the supply chain ” and by
using “descriptive cataloging provided by book vendors and non-U.S.
libraries.”

Visit http://www.ala.org/ala/alcts/newslinks/index.cfm#bc for links to
several documents related to the LC Working Group Report and responses by LC
and ALCTS.

We would like to hear about your experiences in using vendor and publisher
supplied cataloging records. How might this collaboration be improved?

The ALCTS e-forum on the use of vendor/publisher supplied cataloging records
will begin on Tuesday, June 10, at 10am Eastern Daylight Time and continue
until Wednesday, June 11 at 7pm Eastern Time.

The moderators will be Pamela Bluh, ALCTS President and Dina Giambi, ALCTS
President-Elect.
