Re: Binding of Periodicals Corrice, Julia A. 02 Jul 2008 16:38 UTC

Hi Jean,

Our bindery prints vertically or horizontally depending how wide the
spine is and how long the title. Generally, most of our bound volumes
for a specific title tend to be around the same size so the titles on
the spines are either all horizontal or vertical. However, we have a few
titles where the bound issues vary in width, and those have both
vertical and horizontal titles depending on the width of each individual
volume. If this happens, we do not have the lettering redone for the
title. As long as the title is clearly visible for retrieval (not
wrapped around the sides), I don't consider it a problem. I find it more
important that the enumeration and chronology be clearly lined up and
visible. If there is a mistake there, we definitely send it back to be
redone.

For those of you who bind your periodicals, I have a few questions about
your lettering on the spines.

Do you typically have your titles printed on the spines of the bound
volumes horizontally or vertically?
Or does it just depend upon the binding company's thickness
requirements?

If you have a binding company go back and forth between vertical and
horizontal on different volumes of the same title, do you have them redo
the lettering?

I am basically wondering how common it is for binding companies to make
this type of error.

Thanks for your input.
Jean
