I can answer that question, John. It costs Lesley University $17.64 per title we currently subscribe to in order to participate in Portico. Last year when I ran these numbers, it was $18.54 per title. I assume that as Portico adds publishers and titles, our per title cost will continue to go down. I won't argue whether or not it's likely that a trigger event will occur (in fact, it already has twice). But I will say that the cost of this "insurance" pays off in so many ways we never expected at first, including proving to external accreditation organizations that we deserve to be accredited, demonstrating professional commitment to the faculty and administration we serve, and frankly just knowing that we've got what we paid for. However, how much does it cost a library each year to 'participate' in Portico? Also, the only publisher I can recall that 'went out of business' was Harwood Academic some years ago (2001-2002)??? In that disaster, the e content differed, in some cases, significantly from the print issues. There, E content was worthless. As I recall, many of the titles ended up with other publishers and one Developmental Immunology now clinical & Developmental Immunology was eventually picked up by Hindawi, an Open Access publisher. This works with subscriptions to specific journals, not aggregator databases. As you know, content does move in and out of aggregator databases.
