For some additional thoughts on this topic, see the June 2006 issue of
Against the Grain.  The "Group Therapy" column (p. 67-68) is devoted to "To
Check In or Not to Check In" - there are three responses to Rick
Anderson's "gripe" - I prepared one of the responses together with a member
of the serials team.
