Pat Thompson and I did a survey on this last year that included a question that directly relates to your post. Go to the following link and scroll down to question #7.
http://www.surveymonkey.com/sr.aspx?sm=WLVJHZ_2b_2bLGV0CVtBxoDFaHpsNfY5MQ8fgQPjLZrnb2s_3d

If you click on the little "view" icon next to the "other" answer, you can see text entries with more detail about people's approach to this problem.

At EKU we have varied approaches depending on the importance of the title, the availability of "perpetual" access, and other factors. I think all of our p+e titles go to the shelf for at least a few issues, but we increasingly do not bind them.

Hope this helps.

hello SERIALST,

We're hoping to change some of our print subscriptions to online-only, but
we know there are cases where for whatever reason - and if anyone has any
insights on what those reasons are, I'd be happy to know - the publisher in
fact does not offer online-only ..... you can have it in print-only, and you
can have print+online, but you can't have online-only.

I believe what some libraries do in these cases is simply discard/recycle
the issues as they come in, and content themselves with the online access.

Do any of your libraries do that?

tks, Wayne
