Re: usage statistics question Dietsch.Barbara@EPA.GOV 03 Feb 2009 15:45 UTC

Hi Sharon,

Not certain exactly what you are asking for. Are you asking about
standards of collecting usage statistics or are you interested in usage
totals to determine when/if librarians renew or cancel subscriptions.
I'll address the former.

First of all, I would recommend that you read up on the standards for
collecting and presenting your usage statistics. Most, if not all,
libraries would recommend that you use COUNTER (Counting Online Usage of
NeTworked Electronic Resources).

Here is a link to their website followed by a link for the Code of
Practice:

http://www.projectcounter.org/

http://www.projectcounter.org/r3/Release3D9.pdf

Also, if you haven't chosen a platform or vendor yet, I would recommend
HighWire Press:

http://highwire.stanford.edu/about/

As far as usage totals that determine renewal or cancellation. I really
think it depends on the library (small, medium or large), and whether
the library is a special library that needs your journal despite usage.

Hope this helps!

Subject: Re: [SERIALST] usage statistics question

Hello, everyone. I'm with a publisher of a medical journal. We're
looking at
the possibility of getting set up to provide online usage statistics
reports
to our institutional and library subscribers. We will more than likely
go
forward with this since the majority of our subscribers have requested
this
service. We are, in fact, in discussions with vendors now. One question
that
has come to mind, just out of curiosity, is what kind of usage do
librarians
expect. Do you consider usage of 10 times per month satisfactory? Or,
would
you consider usage of 50-75 times per month more reasonable? Obviously
it
depends on how small or large your particular facility is, but is there
a
standard out there that most librarians follow?

Thanks in advance for your help. I haven't posted much, but each time I
have, you've been more than willing to answer questions and help out
when
you can. I appreciate it!
