There are two Sarah's who have responded, but if it helps, we pay the print + online out of the print budget, since there is a physical item involved. If it's strictly online, then we can't 'capitalize' the expense, and then it has to come out of a different budget line. (At least, that's the way the purchasing policy for our campus was once explained to me.) The benefit for separate budgets is handy for statistical purposes, particularly for annual reports or library surveys - such as expenditures for e-resources or expenditures for serials (which could include all budgets or I can filter as needed).
