Serials / Acquisitions Librarian

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The University of Louisville seeks a motivated and knowledgeable librarian to manage the acquisition, access, maintenance, and preservation of serials in all formats. Reporting to the Head, Technical Services, the successful candidate will work with librarians in Ekstrom Library's Technical Services Division (including Current Periodicals) to select and implement special projects, and play a significant role in managing the overall operations of Technical Services. This position interfaces and coordinates with other serials units as the Libraries' print subscriptions continue to migrate to electronic subscriptions. This position also includes original cataloging of continuing resources. The Serials/Acquisitions Librarian works with Collection Development concerning vendors, ordering, and payment issues.  This position will also participate in research and creative work, and service to the libraries, university and the profession.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Provide leadership for a unit consisting of 4-6 FTE staff that acquires, checks-in,  claims, and preserves serials and standing order monographic series
* Develop and implement policies and procedures
* Resolve complex serials related problems encountered by staff
* Oversee use of Voyager acquisitions client
* Prepare reports and maintain statistics
* Perform original cataloging for continuing resources
* Work closely with Collection Development and Electronic Services Dept. regarding acquisitions and access to electronic journals
* Participate in professional organizations and stay informed of current trends in the serials industry regarding vendor-developed services, automated systems and publishing models

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:
* Master's degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited program
* Minimum of 1 year supervisory experience
* Demonstrated knowledge of serials acquisitions and serials management tools
* Demonstrated experience with OCLC and an integrated library system
* Demonstrated knowledge of AACR2, LCSH, and LC classification
* Demonstrated ability to perform original cataloging
* Demonstrated knowledge of electronic serials resources
* Excellent oral and written communication skills
* Possess strong organizational and problem-solving skills, be detail oriented and able to juggle competing priorities
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team
* Demonstrated potential to meet University promotion and tenure requirements

Preferred:
* Experience working with Voyager acquisitions and cataloging modules
* Experience supervising library staff in an academic library setting

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The appointment rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications. The annual minimum salary is $37,000 with a comprehensive benefits package including 22 days annual leave, tuition remission, and several options for medical and retirement plans. Library faculty appointments are twelve month, tenure-track positions.  Promotion and tenure require demonstration of exceptional performance in librarianship, scholarship and service.
