Use a 246 for now and wait and see. Never jump the gun on Serial title changes. You might just make a lot of work for yourself for nothing. Jane's is back at it. The first of a large number of serial publications we subscribe to from Jane's has landed on my desk. Apparently the corporation IHS has purchased Jane's and the publications now have the letters "IHS" (which my spellchecker obstinately insists should be "his", so I'll be referring to it by the "initials") in front of the title on the cover and the spine. However, the font of these initials, which the same height, is ever so slightly narrower (this may be wishful thinking, but a colleague tends to agree) and more to the point: the initials are completely absent from the title on the actual t.p. inside the book. In fact inside the book you see the initials together only with the word Jane's, which seems to me to be indicating the new ownership of the company Jane's and its products. The title inside the book in front of me clearly states: "Jane's sentinel -- country risk assessments : Russia and the CIS". The initials have been relegated to the next & succeeding 3 pages, but are absent after that & do not run along the bottom of the page with the title. This is illustrated similarly at their website: http://www.janes.com/products/janes/security/country- risk/assessments.aspx where under the "overview & benefits" tab they talk about the Jane's Sentinel country risk assessments" without the initials ahead of the title. So. I have over a hundred Jane's titles in my catalog. Some records are closed but dozens are active. I see a number of new serial titles in Connexion with the IHS addition to the title. Before I set my staff to closing & creating new records (we have many Jane's titles that haven't received the new treatment in Connexion) I need to be sure that this is a true title change. Of course this may be a step in the direction & with the next issue the change may be unmistakeable. But at this point I'm not convinced. Can anyone tell me if this is currently a major title change or whether I can have a 246 added to our local records to cover this title variant? Many thanks. //SIGNED// Patricia Fogler Chief, Cataloging Section (AUL/LTSC) Muir S. Fairchild Research Information Center DSN 493-2135 Comm (334) 953-2135
