Hi Paul,

We print labels as sometimes handwriting can be questionably legible.
(e.g. S and 5 or 6; V or U can be difficult to distinguish if handwritten).

If one uses Avery 02213 labels (template available to download from their site for free; used with MS Word), and a laser printer that does not get too hot, the sheets can be fed through a few times without individual labels peeling off and sticking to the inside of the printer.
Generally, we use a serif font so that the little "l" (ell) and a capital "I" (eye), and a "1" (one) can be readily distinguished.

I hope this is helpful.

Best,
Heather

Dear Serial Librarians,

For those libraries who classify your serials in LC do you hand write the call numbers on the loose issues or do you print labels for them? We are just now classifying ours in LC and want to know what other libraries are doing.

Thanks!

Here is a quick list:

And for months:

The full list of abbreviations can be found in Appendix B of AACR2 (2002 revision).

I am in need of a chart or instructions to correctly abbreviate volume, part number, and section numbers, etc, to be used by the bindery assistant and or making item records. Could you please forward?
