Re: binding: staff time and managing collection Heather Shore 24 Aug 2012 14:15 UTC

We subscribe to approx. one thousand titles in print.
About half of them require a box when moved to bound stacks.
Staff time to re-shelve is a bit longer with issues being re-shelved into boxes (if they are put in correct order), rather than a single bound issue being re-shelved.
However, the small bit of extra time has not been a problem to date.
We hire students to perform circulation duties and shelving of monographs and journals.

I'm curious about institutions who have cut back a lot on binding. Do you find you box a lot more items and does this increase the amount of staff time spent managing the collection, or do you only have a small amount of print titles so it doesn't really matter?

We use a product manufactured by Fellowes, called Bankers Box Magazine Box.

They do come in various sizes and are available from a number of office supply companies.

We have found that other boxes with enclosed tops seem to encourage damage to journal/magazine issues as people tend to cram them back into the boxes.

We too have been cutting back on binding. Now one of my problems is how to shelve these loose issues. I have a stash of boxes, in a variety of sizes, from a company called Magafile out of MO, but they are no longer available. Do you use Princeton files, have you found anything enclosed on the top or in a variety of sizes?

Thanks,

Sally

We cut ours drastically a few years ago also.

Basically what I did was learn to stop worrying.

Yes, I was horrified and afraid at first also, but honestly, my fears did not come true, not even the small ones. We do shelfread steadily, and had said if there were problems, we would begin to bind whatever title it was again. But we've not had to do any.

We do, however, tattletape. All issues. Always have.

The times they are a-changing, that's for sure. Good luck!

Hi Everyone,
Our binding budget will be cut this year. I'm not sure by how much or if it will totally be cut. What have you all been doing instead of binding? Sending loose issues to the bound shelves when there normally would have been a unit big enough to bind? If you do this, do you put tattle strips every issue? Right now, we only strip the titles that tend to "walk off," even though they still go missing. What other options are there besides shrink wrap?

Thanks!
Mykie
