Hi, Rich, and other curious minds,

In this case, there is no internal confirmation of the error, because this title has the chronology listed in only one place, on the spine. There is no masthead or colophon and only the volume and numbers are on the inside pages, including the contents page.

I'm often in doubt about these situations, not knowing whether the discrepancy between what I have and what I'm expecting is due to a printing error or a change in publication pattern. When I can, I call or e-mail the publisher; when I cannot, I set the issue aside until the next one arrives and that often clarifies things. That next issue sometimes shows a new pub pattern or contains a note about the previous puzzling numeration or chronology. I've occasionally found my answer by going to the website for that title, where it might say, "now bimonthly," or something like that.

Given that the publisher confirmed that this case is a printing error, I've changed the spine to read "Spring" and have checked it in as such. It will be interesting, of course, to see how databases and authors citing articles in this issue will list them. Will they use "Fall" for the contents of both issues? One interesting wrinkle here is that my Dynix Horizon ILS will not allow me to list two issues with the same chronology for checkin. Obviously there's no completely perfect way to do this, so I'm going to be satisfied with my fix.

This poses a question in my mind ...

Our established procedure is to check in journal issues as what they are called unless there is internal evidence that it's a typographical error (e.g. cover is incorrect but title p. or running headers/footers have the correct enumeration or chronology).

Is that also standard for your library? And if you don't mind adding more, why or why not?

I'm thankful for any/all replies.

Please note that the chronology for the newest issue of Archives of American Art Journal has a printing error. The issue should read Volume 52 Numbers 1-2 Spring 2013, not Fall 2013 as printed. The next issue will be volume 52 Numbers 3-4 Fall 2013, as expected.

Thanks to Darcy Tell at the Smithsonian Institution for her helpful clarification!
