VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

POSITION:  HEAD, SERIALS DEPARTMENT

SALARY RANGE:  Associate Librarian, $35,052 - $50,496 or Librarian, $47,124 -
53,856.  Appointment and salary based on qualifications and experience.

OPEN:  Immediately.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The incumbent, who reports to the Associate University
Librarian for Technical Services and Automation, is responsible for the operati
of the Serials Department: oversight of the Original Cataloging section, Catalo
Support Section, and Serials Record Section, which acquires and checks-in
serials.  The Department maintains bibliographic and holdings records for some
55,000 serials titles and handles approximately 23,000 active titles and checks
in 110,000 pieces annually.  The Department catalogs on RLIN and uses INNOVACQ
Acquisitions and Serial Control modules; the Library is in the process of
installing an on-line processing system containing cataloging/catalog
maintenance, authorities and circulation control functions.  To achieve
successful implementation and operation of the automated systems and for
efficient day to day operation, the Department Head provides leadership in
planning, setting priorities, coordination and management of a department of
approximately 24 FTE.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Graduate degree in librarianship from an ALA-accredited
institution or its equivalent.  Substantial and successful record of profession
experience in serials work, including serials acquisition, and demonstrated
ability in supervision and management of a serials unit or subunit.  Experience
in implementation and/or operation of automated serial control, cataloging,
maintenance, and authority processing highly desirable.  Ability to communicate
orally and in writing, to build and maintain esprit de corps, and to guide the
department effectively toward achieving the goals of the department and of the
Library. Ability to work effectively as a team player with other department hea
in the Library.
