When I sent my first message to the list (with much trepidation), I
 received a message back from the mailer which said
                Undeliverable mail
                0852-Message error - invalid character   Someone in our Academic
 Computing Center did the test to see if it would work for him. And it did. Now
 Birdie tells me that my message did in fact go through and was posted on the
 list on Mar. 7. She doesn't know why I got the error message (I got it twice
 in fact). At least now I know to use the command to see my own messages, which
 is (for those of you who are new and don't know, like I didn't):
           tell listserv at uvmvm set serialst repro

     Sorry for all the unnecessary messages on the list. If anyone knows why I
 am getting the error message, I'd be happy to hear from you.
