NOTIS holdings displays Birdie MacLennan 03 Feb 1993 22:40 UTC

These two messages arrived a couple of hours apart from each other.
Even though Elena answers her own question in the second message,
both messages have been posted for their informational value.
The news that NOTIS 5.1 will not display holdings info. for
"in process" materials would seem to have some fairly major
ramifications for those of us with serials backlogs ... --Birdie

I would like to direct my question to libraries using NOTIS 5.1.

In earlier versions, we have been able to display data from the holdings
record, even though the material was not yet fully catalogued. It was coded to
display the "in process" message in the OPAC. Experimentation in the test
region seems to indicate that "in process" records no longer display the
holdings. Can anyone confirm that display of holdings for in process records
is no longer possible with version 5.1?

We have a substantial cataloguing backlog for serials for which we have an in
process record in the OPAC. Our Public Services staff and our users have found
the display of holdings useful even for this type of material because they
were able to tell whether or not we have the volume required.

Thanks.

And thanks to those of you who replied to my earlier question regarding wrap
around (yes it does seem to work); and the general consensus seems to be that
one ought to code the link and sequence number subfield |8 (previously known
as |6) even if holdings are only coded in the textual fields 866, 867,868.

Subject: holdings display from in process records

Please disregard my earlier message regarding display of holdings information
from in process records. I just had a look at the 5.1 manual and it explicitly
states that no holdings or current receipt information will display for in
process records.
