 WHAT'S HAPPENING:

A major UC Berkeley campus committee, the Academic Planning
Board, will vote February 24 to advise the Chancellor either to (1)
continue the School and recruit a dean or (2) close the School. This
is a critical vote; now is the time to express your support for the
 School!

 MESSAGE TO CONVEY:

-- Value of the library and information profession to the economy,
to education, to quality of life

--Importance of the School to California, the West, the nation.

--Student demand in California exceeds the combined
capacity of existing programs; fewer programs nationwide create
 added need for Berkeley's

           --Availability of jobs

--The excellence of the School and its graduates.

--Importance of School in ensuring diverse library labor force.

--Need for Berkeley to be at forefront of research libraries and
information systems, at a time when these are of growing national
 importance.

--Questionable process: decision is not the result of a careful
assessment of community needs and campus strengths. School is
targeted because it happened to be undergoing routine periodic
 review.

--Impact of a negative decision about the School on your support for
the University and the campus, which hopes to raise $1 billion from
 alumni and business community.
