IMPLEMENTING USMARC FORMAT INTEGRATION

     "Implementing USMARC Format Integration" is the subject of a regional
institute to be held four times in 1993. The program will be held in the
following cities:
     April 26, 1993 Worcester, MA, cosponsored by NELINET
     May 5, 1993 Atlanta, GA, cosponsored by SOLINET
     May 12, 1993 Dallas, TX, cosponsored by AMIGOS
     Sept. 20, 1993      Chicago, IL

     The program has been developed by MARBI (Machine-Readable
Bibliographic Information Committee), an interdivisional committee of the
Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS), the
Library Information and Technology Association (LITA) and the Reference and
Adult Services Division (RASD) divisions of the American Library
Association.
     Format integration will be implemented in the beginning of 1994,
requiring libraries to change their automated catalogs and their cataloging
processes. Catalogers, technical services librarians, library systems
staff, USMARC format trainers and other staff involved in planning the
implementation of USMARC format integration will want to attend this
institute. The program will include tutorials on the new format, enabling
participants to identify ways in which the changes will affect library
procedures and operations, discover cost implications for implementation
and discuss techniques for implementation management. Participants will
receive handouts that demonstrate the application of format integration in
various media.
     Nationally recognized faculty members include Priscilla Caplan, Head
Systems Development Division, Harvard University Library: Karen Coyle,
Technical Specialist, Division of Library Automation, University of
California;  Anne L. Highsmith, NOTIS Coordinator, Texas A&M University;
Laura Kimberly, Training and Support Manager, AMIGOS Bibliographic Council;
 Glenn Patton, Senior Consulting Product Support Specialist, OCLC, Inc.:
Paul J. Weiss, Systems Librarian, National Library of Medicine; and
Richard Greene, Senior Consulting Database Specialist, OCLC, Inc.
     Brochures for these institutes will be mailed shortly to ALCTS, LITA,
and RASD members as well as to organizations that are members of AMIGOS,
NELINET or SOLINET. For more information and registration forms, please
contact Yvonne A. McLean at ALCTS, E-mail: U58294@uicvm.uic.edu.
