Staff at Kerr Library at Oregon State University are reviewing the cost and
efficacy of treating newly acquired unbound periodical issues with 3M security
materials.

To support OSU's mission as a land, sea, and space grant university, Kerr
Library subscribes to approximately 10,000 periodicals. These are housed in an
open stack arrangement and most are security treated. The Library supports a
large research contingent as well as undergraduate studies.

We would appreciate responses from comparable institutions to the following
questions, along with any comments on the philosophy, practice and success of
security treatment of journal issues.

1. What percentage of the total number of titles is security treated?

2. If not all titles are treated, how is it determined which titles or which
type of titles are treated?

3. Who decides whether a title is treated?

4. For those titles which are treated, what percentage of the issues of a
title are treated?
