In reply to the message about black library shelves, I can offer a
different but related circumstance.  When our library was built, the
architect insisted upon black ceilings in order to disguise the air-
conditioning ducts.  Although our area has heaps of natural light, the
black ceilings suck up the light and make the whole area very glarey.  The
Institution of Illumination Engineers were very scathing when they visited
the library asking whose idea it was to choose black ceilings.  My advice
is to insist on the colour you think would be best for your library.
Architects finish, move on and never return. You will be there with your
patrons for a very long time living with black shelves.
