I thought I'd give a couple of examples of variation in practice for
uniform title qualifiers. These are Greenwood reprints, series: Radical
periodicals in the United States. I want to emphasize that the fact that
they are reprints does not change the situation. I cataloged most of the
serials in that series when I was at New York University, and I steadfastly
applied the principles of successive entry. I improvised and made 777 fields
"issued with".

Please examine sn88-27193; I see no point to making four serials out of this.
Place/date is best if for no other reason than the fact that if you hold it
in your hands and look at the content you "know" it's *one* serial.

Now, examine sn88-22061; at NYU we found another publication published in
New York, with the same title. We used place and date on this one. The name
"Alternative" is the publisher; should we have said
130 0 Alternative (Alternative)? Also, the publisher changes with the last
issue. Do we really want two serials in a case like that? Believe it or not,
we did discuss it.

I looked at the CONSER Cataloging manual's examples under "Dates". I looked
up Universe (Doubleday and Company, inc.). The record I found indicates
that it continues: Universe (Random House (Firm)). The key title, however,
gives Garden City, N.Y. as the qualifier. There is a monograph record (The best
from Universe) that has 730 01 Universe (Garden City, N.Y.) in it. This
makes me think perhaps the whole thing was once in one serial record with
Garden City, N.Y. as the qualifier.

This is the kind of thing that can happen if you use commercial
publisher as a qualifier. This is really one serial.
