UPDATE 1 TO CONSER Cataloging Manual CHERYL CALISTA COOK 02 May 1994 21:35 UTC

          Dear Colleague,

I would like to inform you that Update No.1 to the CONSER
Cataloging Manual is now available from the Cataloging
Distribution Service of the Library of Congress. It includes
Module 12 "Interpreting Pre-AACR2 Serial Cataloging Records" and
Module 30 "Direct Access Computer Files Serials." Both modules
are significant additions to the already well-received Part 1 of
          the CONSER Cataloging Manual.

"Interpreting Pre-AACR2 Serial Cataloging Records," prepared by
Jean Hirons, provides an overview of the ALA and AACR cataloging
rules that predated AACR2 and explains how these rules were
applied to serials. This module is particularly useful to those
involved with retrospective conversion and is also valuable to
any serial cataloger who must deal with older records.

"Direct Access Computer File Serials," prepared by Kristin
Lindlan and Anke Grey with the assistance of Janet Szarmach
(Library of Congress) is a particularly exciting section because
it provides, for the first time, indepth guidance for the
cataloging of serials on CD-ROM, floppy disk, and magnetic tape
(i.e., "direct access") formats. It covers all aspects of the
serials cataloging process focusing on the aspects that are
          unique to computer files.

A second binder and updates to Appendix A and B and the Index are
also included in Update no. 1. The price is 46 dollars in North
America and 50 dollars outside North America.

It is also not too late to purchase Part 1 of the CONSER
Cataloging Manual which was released in June of 1993. It covers
all aspects of original cataloging in 18 modules with more than
100 illustrations. It is priced at 60 dollars in North America
and 65 dollars outside North America.

The CONSER Cataloging Manual is an ongoing effort under the
direction of the Serial Record Division of the Library of
Congress. Used with the CONSER Editing Guide, the CONSER
Cataloging Manual is designed to give you the complete picture
          for cataloging serial publications.
