Dear Serials people,

Is there anyone out there that can tell me how they have handled the FEMS
series?

There are five titles in this series and they shared volume numbering up
until the end of 1992 after which time the publisher changed the volume
numbering so that each title has its own sequence.

We use Dewey to classify our periodicals and so we had the five titles
interfiled so that the volume numbering followed in a logical order. Should
we now separate the five titles into different Dewey numbers, which will
mean the volume numbering will jump all over the place?

My second problem with this title is that Dialog Medline on CD-Rom has
cited the volume numbering differently, as if each title has a seperate
sequence rather than a shared sequence. However, Biological Abstracts on
CD-Rom has cited the volume numbering as a shared sequence, the same as
what is listed on the title page. So if you search for the same article
in these databases you get different volume numbering. We are often
getting patrons looking for a different volume to what we have it listed
as.

Would it be possible to list both volume numbers on the spine? I would be
interested to hear how other libraries are handling this, as I am very
confused!
