Elizabeth: the reasons I would keep the non-current kardex titles, in a
separate "dead file" are:

1.) I believe we need to keep records of everything received for at
least 5 years. This obviously varies by state and institution.

2.) Occasionally (or rather, regularly) we receive "mystery mail" which
does not identify where it belongs or why we are receiving it. Sometimes
when a title ceases publication, the publisher may send us another title
to make up for the remainder of the earlier title's subscription (even
though the two titles may not be related). It is useful if a title we
thought dead is suddenly revived.

3.) Even if the title is no longer received, the issues may still be
retained in the library. Sometimes the kardex record is more complete
than the shelf-list (especially for microfiche or items not checked in by
the catalog dept.)

I hope that helps.
