MICROFICHE NEXT TO PAPER VOLUMES Joe Edelen, University of South Dakota 16 Aug 1994 23:04 UTC

The University of South Dakota buys almost no journal titles in fiche.
However, one of the titles we receive, THE JOURNAL OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY,
supplementary material, is, as you know, published in fiche.

We are considering barcoding the fiche, putting them either into a box or some
sort of plastic holder in a 3-ring binder and placing them right next to their
parent title in the stacks (we file journals by title here).

While we don't have other titles in mind at the present, I suspect if we do
this for this title we are setting a standard for future titles. We would
probably stagger the barcodes on the envelope to avoid the "bulge", write the
title on the envelope so we could match orphan fiche in the future, and write
the number of fiche that are supposed to be in the envelope on the envelope.
We would also probably have an ownership stamp.

I would be most interested in reactions (no heart attacks please),
observations, words of wisdom from someone who has tried this and found it
successful/unsuccessful.

Thanks in advance.
