Subject: Duplicate Year end issues

Dear People,

I am very interested in the discussion of dealing with publishers and
Ebsco. I work in a medical library in a hospital. We have about 300
journal titles. I have been here one year so I still consider myself a
novice so please be patient. First of all I found the information shared
very beneficial to me and I will start dealing directly with the
publishers.

I am greatly frustrated dealing with Ebsco in relation to claiming
journals not recv'd. I claim in the proper amount of time, whether over
the computer or on the phone. I recv. a monthly claim form and dutifully
check those I have still not recv. Months go by and then I am informed
that that issue is no longer available. So we have incomplete volumes and
then the chore begins to replace them. On several occasions I have made a
request over the phone (cancel, add a journal, etc.) Called again several
months later when and am told it was never followed through.

So, I am wondering, do I understand right that perhaps it would be better
for me to call the publisher directly to claim issues? Strikes me that we
are doing their work but in the long run would save time.

Also, I would like to ask what method of finding back issues has been the
most successful for people. I have found the medlib list the best. There
is by the way a list just for back issues called backserv (to subscribe
LISTERV@ SUN.READMORE.COM) but it seems not to be utilized to much extent
by medical libraries. There is the MLA exchange, who thank God are going
to be putting their list on a computer disk starting next year.

Well, this is the longest note I have ever written. This discussion is
greatly appreciated by me. I don't feel so alone out there in library
land. Much thanks.

Has ANYONE out there solved this problem? Where is the problem, with the
publisher?...the agent?....My process at the University of Dayton, is to
copy both labels and send them to our agent (Ebsco) and then wait for the
publisher to adjust our expire. I would appreciate any help anyone can
give!!!!

Sonya-- I also use Ebsco and also sometimes send labels, but it is quicker
to call the pub direct in the U S. If the publishers says you must go thru
Ebsco, you can also try doing an EBSCONET claim type 10 or 11. Also, some
but not all publishers will have unique subscription numbers. Often these
are called account or even member numbers. If you add this info to your
Ebsco renewal it can help for next year, but it is not a guarantee.

It is all very time consuming but that's why they pay us serials guys the
big bucks.
