Date: Wed, 01 Mar 1995 14:42:45 -0500 From: CHAPMANM@TURING.LAW.NYU.EDU Subject: Position Available SERIALS LIBRARIAN, NEW YORK UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW LIBRARY New York University Law School Library has an opening for an enthusiastic and well motivated Serials Librarian who can contribute to the growth of the global law school and to the management of a library collection noted for its depth and coverage of multiple jurisdictions and languages. The ideal candidate is one who enjoys a flexible work environment and appreciates the centrality of user needs to the technical services mission. S/he must be able to move comfortably between technical services and public services functions as the library staff evolves to meet changes in technology and budgetary constraints, and as the focus of library collections changes from print to electronic formats and from ownership to access. Major Duties: Manage serials control activities and ensure quality control of the serials database on the INNOPAC library system. Be responsible for some serials cataloging. Oversee serials marking and binding and repairs for both serials and monographs. Supervise the work of 4 FT staff and student assistants in a busy and service-oriented department, and maintain written operational procedures. Coordinate small exchange program of foreign and some domestic law reviews. Work closely with the Associate Librarian for Technical Services and Technical Services Manager on acquisitions matters. Coordinate serials activities with other departments and faculty members. In consultation with other library personnel, plan and implement a project to add standardized summary holdings information to serial records. Participate in collection development and librarywide activities, carry out special projects, serve as liaison to faculty members, and staff the reference desk. Participate in professional organizations and keep abreast of trends in serials management and changes in information technology. Requirements: M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited library school; 2 years' experience in technical services in an automated library environment preferably including serials experience; online cataloging experience; knowledge of online serials control, RLIN or OCLC, MARC formats, and microcomputers; knowledge of French or German; excellent supervisory and organizational skills; demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a team member; ability to communicate clearly and effectively with individuals and groups, both orally and in writing. Desirable: Knowledge of Innovative Interfaces system; knowledge of Chinese or Japanese; familiarity with electronic publishing, rights acquisition, and intellectual property rights; interest in pursuing legal studies (part-time law study is not available at NYU but several law schools with evening programs are nearby). This opening can lead to a tenure-track position. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience ($30,000 minimum). Excellent fringe benefits.
