Display of Serials & Binding Questions Myrna Hermann 06 Mar 1995 14:43 UTC

Our Library is currently reviewing the procedures for two tasks
performed in the section and would appreciate input from other Libraries.

1. DISPLAY OF LATEST SERIAL ISSUES

Our journals are checked in daily and placed in a holding area.
They are collected on Fridays and taken to the New Serials Display Stand.
The previous week's journals are removed and shelved in the main
serials collection. The new serials are then placed on the display
stand in call number order.

This procedure was established as a service to our users who like to
sit and browse but it is becoming very time consuming for the staff involved
and I am interested in how other libraries deal with latest issues.

2. BINDING OF JOURNALS

We do not have a binding facility on campus so our journals have to
be sent away for binding. In Australia our student break is
from mid November to mid February and this is when the majority of
educational institutions send their journals off to the binders around
the country. Because of the large amount of binding to be processed,
these binders often find it difficult to have the journals back in
time for semester start and this then disadvantages our users.

I send binding away in small amounts through the year to try and
alleviate the rush at the end of the year but find I cannot please
everyone as it is always "that" particular issue the user requires that
is away for binding.

I have tried sending lists to our lecturers each time a batch of
journals was dispatched but it didn't seem to have any effect.

Can anyone come up with a brilliant idea to keep my head from
chopping block each year.

Thank you very much for the time.

Regards.
