Newspaper Check-in Linda Carpenter 29 Jun 1995 21:28 UTC

It has been suggested by the head of our Serials Acquistions department that
we discontinue checking in the newspapers we receive, both U.S. and foreign.
The suggestion comes as a result of the problems we have had with newspapers
in the past; namely that they are messy, it is time consuming to process them,
they often don't come regularly (particularly Africa and Asia), they are
checked in manually because it is to difficult to check them in on computer
daily, etc. It would be so much easier if we could basically open up the
packages and drop them on the shelves. Are you still checking in newspapers?
Have you discontinued newspaper check-in? Either way I would like to hear the
pros and cons regarding this issue.
