"Government Shutdown" Impacts the Depository Program

The Government Printing Office (GPO) has not been authorized by an
appropriation for FY 1996 or a Continuing Resolution to continue its
normal operations. In accordance with the
Anti-Deficiency Act, no further financial obligations may be incurred by
GPO, except for very limited, excepted purposes.
These include functions which are related to, and supportive of, the
accomplishment of work for Congress and those executive branch
agencies which either are funded or perform those services where the
failure to perform would result in an imminent threat to the safety of
human life or the protection of property.

Because the operations of the Superintendent of Documents have not
been deemed excepted, all employees of the Library
Programs Service (LPS) and the Documents Sales Service are being
placed in a furlough status effective on November 14,
1995, and continuing until further notice.

Therefore, all Federal Depository Library Program operations conducted
by LPS will be suspended for the duration of the funding lapse.

Depository inspections scheduled for this week in West
Virginia and Mississippi have been canceled.

The last shipment from LPS is shipping list 96-0027-P, dated
11/13/95. However, microfiche shipments from LPS' contractors and
separates shipments may continue for some time; until the work the
contractors have in hand is completed.
