Not only do we bind the monthly issues but, when needed, also rebind the annual cumulations because the original binding is not strong enough. We consider the extra expense well spent because these titles get heavy use. I'm more annoyed about the poor quality of the binding considering the subscription price. > Date: Thu, 18 Apr 1996 09:46:37 -0500 > From: Jude Lynch <lynchj@BLIS.UTHSCSA.EDU> > Subject: "Trends in.." titles > > We have had a problem with the annual cumulations to the "Trends in.." > titles (i.e., Trends in neurosciences, etc.) These are furnished as part > of our subscription but they simply are not holding up to library use. After a few years, EITHER the top of the spine starts tearing after use OR the cover starts separating from the cover on the outside flyleaf OR BOTH. We have had some of them reattached if the cover is still ok but others we have had a standard journal cover added. If you look at the volumes, the pages are not THAT weighty so they should hold up but dont. These are Elsevier titles. David Weeks (Prince Edward Island) posted a message a little while ago about a different problem with an Elsevier title (Parasitology today) where the May insert is listed in the reference ed. but is not printed there. We have just received our reference ed for 1995 and it also does not have it. Karen Viers sent to David a message about a response she had gotten to this problem (& please correct me if I'm wrong Karen) but Karen was given information that the pages were not meant to be added. "Trends in pharmacological sciences" ( Elsevier) also has supplements which are not included in the annual reference ed. Most of these are titled "199_ Receptor and ion channel nomenclature" At least THESE ARE NOT in the T.C. or indexes. However we still have to deal with these supplements. A suggestion (from the director of the Klingon Empire Central Archives) was that possibly we should send an e-mail campaign to either put all the articles in the reference ed. that appear in the monthly issues. OR possibly Elsevier should reduce the cost of these type of titles and offer the "reference ed." as a separate title and let us decide if we want to bind the monthly issues or buy their "reference edition." I think that Elsevier would soon find out how much we like, or dislike the "reference edition". We just made the decision to bind the monthly issues. I believe that the prebound volumes lack some of the editorial material; I have not checked prebounds against the paper issues to verify this belief, however.
