Ingrid:
Newspapers are my major nightmare!  I only keep a rolling twelve months
of the Wall Street Journal and bundle them month by month with very large
four-way rubber bands and place them side by side across the shelf:-
January  February
March    April      etc.
I have also tried keeping things like Chronicle of High Ed. in cut down
copy-paper boxes (front cut out) also bundled in 4-way rubber bands and
placed folded side out every other month.  (This keeps the pile from
escalating on one edge like a ski slope!)
Wish I had better answers....like yourself I will be looking to see what
others are doing.  Good Luck!
