Libraries SEARCH EXTENDED NETWORK LIBRARIAN WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES The West Virginia University Libraries announce the availability of a new Systems position: Network Librarian. The successful candidate should be a library professional with strong background in library automation systems or extensive experience in a complex data processing environment. This is a 1.2 year appointment supported by a large federal grant to develop a state-wide network to support seamless connectivity between academic, public, and school libraries operating in a primarily NOTIS/VTLS environment. Opportunities may exist for permanent employment at the end of the grant. RESPONSIBILITIES: Working in a team environment, help to plan for and implement a networked infrastructure for the West Virginia University Libraries node of the project. Interface with the Systems staff of the WVU Libraries, WVNET, the WV Library Commission network, and telecommunications specialists to develop solutions for hardware, software, and operational problems encountered by network development. Implement and monitor the progress of corrective actions developed to address problems reported by project participants. Assist with the management, testing, and installation of all new NOTIS releases and enhancements in a timely and efficient manner. Implement new network functions identified by the Implementation Team and the academic libraries participating in the network. Report and monitor all unresolved problems, issues, and potential enhancements to the operations of the network. Help to plan, schedule, and implement initial NOTIS database loads and interconnectivity requirements for each academic library added to the network. Develop documentation/ training seminars to instruct local and remote libraries in the use of the network's services. Develop and conduct co-presentations of the project to library personnel locally, state-wide, and at national meetings. Serve as liaison between the WVU Libraries and other academic libraries, computer analysts, telecommunication analysts, data control operators, NOTIS personnel, and database providers participating in the network. Perform other duties as assigned by the principal investigator and departmental manager. REQUIRED: MLS from ALA accredited program or a related field. At least three years experience in implementing and utilizing a library automation system in a cooperative setting; working knowledge of file transfer protocols, WWW, gopher use, Internet, and client servers as required. Outstanding interpersonal skills and excellent communication skills also required. DESIRED: Project management experience, knowledge of USMARC and other library formats. NOTIS Library Management System installation experience, experience interfacing with database vendors and producers, and exposure to UNIX, CICS, VM, TSO and networked environments. Knowledge of personal computers and an aptitude for learning new technologies is also desirable. SALARY: $35,000 annually. Excellent fringe benefits.
