Subject: Call for Books

July 22, 1996

To Whom it May Concern:

We are writing to ask if we can contact your members about our Call for
Books for developing countries in Asia. We are seeking donated books,
journals and other forms of information, for faculty and students in
China and Southeast Asia.

The needs are critical -- these countries are training a new generation
of teachers, researchers, managers, technicians and others, and struggling
to do so with poor facilities and outdated resources.

More than 1 million books per year are wanted, by hundreds of
universities and schools, but the costs are prohibitive. (Senior professors
at China's leading universities earn US$100 or so per month, so that few
can afford to buy the books and journals they need).

We think that many of your members will know this and want to help, as
members of other associations have done including the American Council of
Learned Societies, American Association of University Women, and the
National Association of College Stores.

More than 40 constituent societies of ACLS have placed notices in their
newsletters advising their members of this opportunity to donate their
unwanted books. Individuals have responded with generous contributions:
retiring professors have donated entire libraries, others have
given journal runs, reference works, information-rich magazines, and
novels.

A description of our book-donation program is on the World Wide Web:
http://www.bridge.org/Books.html. We welcome you to link this page to
your Home Page to help publicize the needs. Thank you in advance for
whatever you can do to share this information with your colleagues.

Bridge to Asia is a nonprofit organization based in California and Hong
Kong. Since our start in 1987, thanks to many donors, we have shipped
