The Stanford Univeristy libraries wishes to hire 2 FTE catalogers at
the Assistant/Associate Librarian rank who will assume responsibility
for widely-configured cataloging duties in a dynamic environment.
The Libraries are located on the Campus of Stanford University in
Stanford, California, near San Francisco.  Approximately 80,000
items are acquired and processed by the Libraries each year, 12,000
of which require creation of original catalog records.  The Libraries
have just implemented the SIRSI Unicorn library system.  Stanford is
a full NACO participant, and catalogers are preparing to participate
in the Program for Cooperative Cataloging's BIBCO program.

The two positions will respectively emphasize Slavic language cataloging
and electronic media cataloging although other cataloging duties may be
involved in each.  Allocation of assignments within each particular area
of emphasis may change in response to changing priorities.
General duties for each position are as follows:

1.  The Slavic cataloger will be responsible for original cataloging,
including creation of NACO authority records for: 1) Slavic language
serials, monographs, and audio-visual materials; 2) Non-Slavic
language serials and monographs as assigned, such assignment being
contingent upon language background and skills. Additionally, this
cataloger may help train and support other staff processing Slavic
language serials, monographic, computer file and audio-visual
materials, act as internal and external standards liaison for
Slavic language cataloging, and supervise special cataloging projects
as needed.

2.  The Electronic Media Cataloger will be responsible for original
cataloging, including creation of NACO authority records, in English
and other Western European languages for:  1.  Remote and locally
networked serial and monographic electronic resources (including the
creation of MARC records and TEI conformant SGML headers); 2.  Other
computer files; 3.  Audio-visual material; 4.  Other serials and
monographs as assigned, such assignment being contingent upon language
background and skills.  Additionally this cataloger may help train and
suport other staff processing materials in any of the areas above, act
as internal and external standards liaison for electronic media
cataloging, and supervise special projects as needed.

REQUIREMENTS:

1.  Familiarity with current general cataloging standards, especially
AACR2 rev., LCSH subject and classification practice, Library of Congress
Rule Intepreptations and the USMARC formats, is desirable (demonstrated
experience is required at the Associate Librarian rank).
2. Familiarity with Sirsi Unicorn or other integrated library system
is desirable.
3.  Good working knowledge of one European language other than English
is required; preference will be given to candidates with German language
fluency (except in the case of applicants for the Slavic cataloging position).
4.  Subject background in a social science area is desirable.
5.  Experience with cataloging in a research library environment is
desirable.
6.  Applicants for the Slavic position must be fluent in Russian;
knowledge of at least one other Slavic language is desirable; preference
will be given to candidates with a working knowledge of Polish.
7.  Some familiarity with emerging electronic materials cataloging
issues and standards, especially SGML, is desirable for applicants
for the electronic media cataloging position (required at the Associate
Librarian level).
8.  Ability to work independently in a production oriented environment
is required.
9.  Ability to adapt flexibly to a changing environment is required.
10.  An MLS from ALA accredited Library School or equivalent in education
and experience is required.

Salary:
The rank and salary will be determined by experience.
Assistant Librarian salary range:
$34,200 - $53,500 (in hire max $43,500)
Associate Librarian salary range:  $37,900 -
$60,000 (in hire max $48,200)
