Re: links (to other serials & now to Web pages) Mitch Turitz 27 Sep 1996 19:07 UTC

Patty:
I was thinking of the link to the Web page in terms of "other editions
avaiable." Which IS a ligitimate link (previously done as 580/775).

The Web edition is different but does include a lot of the information
in the titles you mentioned (you can search for individual institutions,
financial information, geographical locations, etc.) Your students might
find it actually easier to search than looking in several different books
(one for financial information, one for colleges in the southwest, one for
the east, etc.)

  Regarding linking problems:
Without actually seeing the titles in question I can't give you an exact
answer. Sometimes, if we have title A, continue by title B which is
continued by title C, but we only have title A and C, I would (in our
catalog only) make the 580 (link note) refer from title A to C and not
mention title B, especially if it was unlikely that we would ever get
title B.
The thing about these college guides is that they are only as useful as
the most recent one or two editions. It is not really practical to keep
numerous backfiles of college guides unless you are a research institution
and have a real historical need for that kind of source material. So you
might want to check with your Education/Reference selector(s) for that
subject area and suggest that the earlier titles be discarded.

Just to add to the confusion:
You may want to consider adding the Web link (856) to the Peterson's
Education Center Web site at: http://www.petersons.com
This will let your patrons know that there is another version available
through the Web (and it's FREE!)

Mitch,
Since you're the only one to respond to my plea for help (and with
another question, too!) I'm going to follow-up on your curve-ball. I
checked the Web site you cited and it's very possible I missed it, but I
definitely didn't find access to the actual book I'm cataloging on line.
My understanding (& perhaps this is just a local slant) is that we would
only want to make a link to the actual work on line. Since the Web page
is
largely promotional (walking tours & book orders, etc.) and doesn't
contain
the title I'm cataloging, I hadn't considered adding that link. Is the
856
meant to be used to link to a related web site like this?
And finally, don't you ever have gaps between your serial records?
How DO you handle them? Pardon the whine, I'd hoped to have at least one
actual answer to the linking question.
