Subject: serials circ. policies

I am interested in other libraries' serials circulation policies. We are a
small college library serving about 500 students. Right now, bound
periodicals can be checked out overnight. Unbound issues, both current and
non-current, are not to be checked out of the library. We have a copy
machine in the library for making copies of articles. However, in certain
cases, unbound issues have been checked out to students or faculty using a
sign-out sheet.

I think we should do away with the sign-out sheet altogether because it
creates the problem of "Under what circumstances is the situation urgent
enough to let the issue go out?" We do not have a written policy about
this. Can some of you briefly describe your serials circulation procedures
and/or policies? Is it always a good idea to have a written policy? Thank
you for your help!
