Vermont opportunity: St. Johnsbury Athenaeum position description Ken Hammer 17 Jan 1997 21:27 UTC
The St. Johnsbury Athenaeum, an historic non-profit library and art gallery, seeks an Executive Director. The person should have excellent skills in historic preservation, development, business management and grant writing. Experience in arts administration, development, or museum curation would be applicable. Perhaps more important, this person should have a strong desire to lead the Athenaeum into the next century on a financially sound footing, employing technology while preserving the heritage of the collections. The Athenaeum serves the community of St. Johnsbury and the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont as a place where poets, novelists and children's writers of national stature read from their works in progress, where teenagers study after school, where toddlers attend story hours and from where homebound elders receive books and music. The Athenaeum is one of Vermont's ten largest libraries, with a collection of over 45,000 items. Recently designated as a National Historic Landmark, the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum and Art Gallery was founded in 1871 by Horace Fairbanks to fulfill his vision of a place of culture and learning in a Vermont community. The building, designed by John Davis Hatch III, features a slate mansard roof, tower and cornices to serve as an architectural centerpiece of St. Johnsbury's lovely Victorian district. Internally, its crowning glory, the Art Gallery, was built especially to house Albert Bierstadt's commanding painting, "The Domes of the Yosemite". The Gallery preserves intact an entire collection of the art of the period, as the oldest art gallery in America still in its original form. The existing staff is of high quality and is motivated to serve the community. The Board of Trustees has a clear vision of the opportunities for the future of the institution, and is further ensuring that future with a capital fund drive. The Director will have the opportunity to take advantage of this campaign and make a significant contribution to the arts and literature within a supportive community. Inquiries by email.
