POSITION:       Authority Control Librarian

AVAILABLE:      May 1, 1997

DESCRIPTION:    The Authority Control Librarian will lead the
Authority Control Section of the Catalog Department in
management of the name and subject authority process; report
directly to the Head of the Catalog Department; maintain up-
to-date documentation of authority-related policies and
procedures; coordinate efforts with staff members of all
sections of the Department, staff members of all departments
of the Library, and of the separately administered Health
Science and Law libraries in assuring that entries in the
online catalog comply with accepted national standards; work
closely with the Library Systems Office, authority vendor
liaison, and Catalog Management Section to ensure timely
implementation of authority updates and changes; supervise
one full-time staff member assigned to the Section; and,
participate in departmental managers' meetings.

Will act as liaison with other campus cataloging centers for
special requests and the coordination of authority control
policies and procedures.  Will work closely with campus
technical advisory committee on authority issues and provide
technical support in maintaining departmental documentation.

Other responsibilities of the position may include serving
as site manager for the Department's Web page; helping to
provide technical support and training for other staff
members in the use of OCLC and DRA; and, cataloging of
electronic media including electronic journals.

THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARIES:   The University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill is the country's oldest state
university.  It has an enrollment of some 24,000 students,
employs more than 2,200 faculty, and offers the Ph.D. in 62
fields.  The Academic Affairs Library, which consists of
Davis Library, Wilson Library, House Undergraduate Library,
and nine departmental libraries, holds over 4.1 million
volumes and 3.4 million microforms in its collection.  The
Library is a member of the Association of Research
Libraries, the Center for Research Libraries, the Triangle
Research Libraries Network (TRLN), and SOLINET, and
participates in NACO and enhancement of OCLC OPAC records.
The TRLN libraries, including the Health Sciences and Law
libraries at Chapel Hill plus the libraries at Duke
University, North Carolina Central University, and North
Carolina State University, have combined collections of over
10 million volumes.

The Triangle region is rated among the most desirable places
to live and work in North America and offers its residents a
wide array of recreational, cultural, and intellectual
activities.  Both the mountains and the seashore are less
than a day's drive from Chapel Hill.

QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:   An ALA-accredited MLS; a minimum of three years'
professional experience in cataloging and authority work;
experience using OCLC for cataloging; knowledge of AACR2R
and LC rule interpretations; LC name authority file, LCSH,
MARC Authority Format; experience in original cataloging;
strong communication and organizational skills; the ability
to work effectively with a wide range of staff members.
Flexibility and the ability to adapt to change are essential
as is a continuing commitment to professional development
and growth.

PREFERRED:   Experience in the use of DRA and LTI authority
processing; familiarity with NACO, SACO, CONSER, and BIBCO
procedures; experience of and interest in World Wide Web
site creation and maintenance; experience with SGML, HTML,
and other Web standards highly desirable; knowledge of local
area networks and the internet; experience in cataloging
electronic serials.

SALARY:   This is a twelve-month academic appointment with a
minimum salary  of $30,000.  Standard State benefits of
annual leave, sick leave, and State or TIAA-CREF retirement
plan.
