Cataloger

The North Carolina State University Libraries invites applications and
nominations for the position of Cataloger.  The Libraries is positioning
itself as a leader in new information technologies and envisions a central
role for the Cataloging Department in providing access to all resources.  With
eight librarians and twenty support staff, the Cataloging Department provides
for the organization of the information resources of the NCSU Libraries system
(including those in Special Collections and four branch libraries) with an
emphasis on disciplines in science and technology.  The Department adds
30,000+ titles per year to a database of over 2 million records representing a
wide variety of print, nonprint, and electronic formats.  The Libraries'
Information System, including the online catalog, runs on DRA software and
provides access to numerous electronic databases, gateway-accessed electronic
journals, and other Internet resources.

Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Head of the Cataloging Department, catalogs
monographs and serials in a variety of formats and languages.  Works closely
with a team of catalogers dedicated to achieving ambitious goals of cataloging
quality and quantity in an environment focused on the effective use of
emerging information technologies. Serves on library-wide committees, task
forces, and teams.  Is active professionally and contributes to developments
and trends in the description and organization of information resources.

Qualifications

Required:  ALA-accredited MLS. Ability to catalog in a variety of subjects and
formats.  Knowledge of applications of current and emerging technologies as
they enable cataloging staff to meet the needs of users.  Reading knowledge of
a foreign language.  Excellent interpersonal skills, including written and
oral communication. Ability to work collegially in a team environment as well
as the ability to work independently.  Ability to communicate clearly,
knowledgeably, and personably, orally and in writing, with clients and
colleagues. Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

Preferred: Familiarity with an online integrated library system.  Subject
knowledge in the areas of science and technology.

Libraries has over 2.5 million volumes in its collection, and acquires more
than 21,000 current serials, and a total annual budget in excess of $17
million, with over $7 million allocated to collections.

The NCSU Libraries is a founding member of SOLINET and a member of the
Association of Research Libraries and the Center for Research Libraries.
Together with Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill, NCSU founded the Triangle Research Libraries Network, a cooperative
effort of distinction among four major universities with combined resources
approaching 12 million volumes, and collections budgets totaling more than $22
million.

Salary and Benefits

The Libraries offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience, not
less than $29,500 for this entry level position.  Librarians at NCSU have
academic status without tenure or rank.  Benefits include: 26 days vacation;
health insurance (comprehensive major medical or HMO), and TIAA/CREF, state,
or other retirement options.  Additional and optional dental, life,
disability, deferred compensation, and legal plans are available.  Tuition
