Subject: Bulletin of Hispanic studies--Liverpool vs Glasgow production

Ed. Note: This title and the dispute has been the topic of much
conversation on SERIALST. Interested readers may want to check
the **discussion list archives** for messages from librarians, the
two publishers, and the ISSN folks. More discussion is, of course,
welcome. --Birdie MacLennan/Moderator

This is an interesting situation, and the first time I have encountered
such a publication "drama."

We subscribe to the journal, Bulletin of Hispanic studies (formerly,
Bulletin of Spanish studies), which has been published for many years by
the Institute of Hispanic Studes in Liverpool. After a recent and
seemingly bitter dispute and threatened lawsuit
among members of the editorial board, there appeared in 1996 2 distinct
"versions" of the title--one published in Liverpool by the Institute and
one published in Glasgow by the the University of Glasgow. Each is vying
to produce the "official" title.

With the exception of very slight cover title changes, the issues for each
look the same. Both also have the same volume and issue numbers and the
same ISSN! The contents, however, are different. There are 2 records in
OCLC: #4900237 (Liverpool title) and #35144224 (Glasgow title).

We have received all 4 issues for both titles for v. 73 (1996), but thus
far, have only received nos. 1 and 2 of the Liverpool publication for
v.74 (1997).

My questions: How are other libraries treating these titles? Does anyone
know whether the lawsuit between the 2 factions has been settled? Does
anyone know if the Glasgow publication has ceased -- or has anyone also
received any issues for v. 74 of the Glasgow publication?

How can anyone think serials work is boring?
