THE CENTER FOR BIBLIOGRAPHICAL STUDIES AND RESEARCH THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, RIVERSIDE SEEKS APPLICANTS FOR: NEWSPAPER CATALOGING TEAM LEADER to be stationed at the University of California, Berkeley POSITION: Newspaper Cataloging Team Leader, The California Newspaper Project RANK: Assistant Librarian, Step I-III; Temporary Status; Position funded through June 30, 1998, with possible renewal for additional terms. SALARY: $31,032-34,188 POSITION AVAILABLE: May 15, 1997 Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. The Center for Bibliographical Studies and Research, established in 1989, manages four major projects of international significance. One of these, the California Newspaper Project (CNP), is part of a nationwide scheme to provide a complete record of surviving newspapers published in this country. Its principal funding is derived from the Preservation Program of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The CNP has three main components: 1. A canvass of all the known repositories holding U.S. newspapers in the entire state and the preparation of records in situ of the titles and runs held of each newspaper; 2. Creation of bibliographic and holdings records for each title according to Library of Congress United States Newspaper Program procedures and guidelines and input of those records into the CONSER database, a national serials database maintained on the OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) online union catalog; and 3. Preservation, to include both an analysis of existing microfilms of California newspapers and development of a plan to film additional newspapers to provide a full record of the history of the state. POSITION DESCRIPTION: This position reports to the Assistant Director for the California Newspaper Project who is stationed at the University of California, Berkeley. Responsibilities include performing original and copy cataloging of newspapers in OCLC, and reviewing cataloging copy for adherence to standards established by AACR2, LC Rule Interpretations, the CONSER Editing Guide, the USNP Newspaper Cataloging and Union Listing Manual, and the California Newspaper Project. The Newspaper Cataloger will conduct field work and cataloging of newspapers in the San Francisco Bay Area and northern California coastal counties, supervise one library assistant stationed at UC Berkeley, oversee data input at the California Newspaper Project office at the California State Library, and assume additional responsibilities relative to the mission of the Project. SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Position may require lifting materials up to 20 pounds, climbing, and working in dusty or musty conditions. Driving is required. Travel up to 50%. QUALIFICATIONS: Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or foreign equivalent, including coursework in cataloging; ability to work well with colleagues and with the public; good oral and written communication skills; adaptability and the ability to work independently. Preferred: Cataloging experience using the MARC serials format and AACR2; experience with OCLC, other online computer systems and database software; experience with preservation microfilming; supervisory experience; reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages, preferably Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, or other languages of newspapers in California. REPRESENTATION: The Newspaper Cataloger position is represented by the University Federation of Librarians, AFT, the University of California's collective bargaining agent.
