Electronic Publishing IG meeting at ALA (Lloyd Davidson) Marcia Tuttle 23 Jun 1997 11:48 UTC
---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Sun, 22 Jun 1997 17:31:21 -0500 From: Lloyd Davidson <LDavids@NWU.EDU> Subject: Electronic Publishing IG meeting at ALA On Monday morning, June 30, from 9:30-11:00 AM, the newly founded LITA* Electronic Publishing/Electronic Journals I.G. will have its first organizational meeting in the Raphael room of Crowne Plaza Parc Fifty-Five in San Francisco. Membership in LITA is not required for attendance or for participation in this group, although you must join LITA within 6 months to retain IG membership. The purpose of this meeting will be to define the direction of future development for this group and to develop ideas for programs for next year's LITA and American Library Association meetings. For LITA we might consider a preconference session for the next annual ALA and there will also be a LITA National Institute in Oakland, CA in November of 1998 on Support Issues for which some aspect of this topic might be applicable. Electronic publishing is changing virtually all aspects of the library's functions, from public service and collection development to technical services and staffing, so there is no shortage of potential areas for this interest group to explore (see below). Bring your ideas and enthusiasms and suggestions for speakers. The types of issues we might wish to address include library publishing on the Internet (e.g. scanning images, developing graphically oriented databases, mounting SGML and TEX tagged files on the Web, producing audio and video materials), the library as a consumer of electronically published material, management and technical issues associated with providing access to multimedia materials, the varied effects caused by the sudden influx of large numbers of electronic journals into the library environment, dealing with the replacement of Fair Use by contract law, attempts by electronic publishers to bypass the library completely in providing access to their materials (in some cases not even allowing institutional subscriptions to such materials), security issues, and establishing standards for authentication for accessing off site materials such as electronic journals. Other ideas and suggestions for program presenters are welcome. LITA interest groups were established by LITA in 1985 to facilitate a more efficient and effective response to its members' interest in and involvement with new library technologies. They provide an excellent, informal means for ALA members to provide input, direction, new ideas and help develop programs and publications in the rapidly changing environment we now inhabit.
