At the Rochester Institute of Technology (Rochester, NY), students
completing Master's and Doctoral theses are required to submit one copy to
the library. The library pays for the binding of that copy. Additional
copies can also be bound at the same time, but the student and/or college
dept. must pay for those additional copies. (Many departments require
departmental copies, but only a few actually pay for the binding of the
copies. I believe that the student pays all photocopying expenses.)

Each department has its own thesis guidelines (which vary), but the
library has been the informal "control" center for the campus. (There is
no Graduate Office at RIT.)

Our students (both Masters and PhDs pay a $75 flat fee that covers:
1 bound copy for the library collection; 1 copy for the department's
collection; 1 for the student; and 1 copy for microfiche reproduction
in the Canadian Theses Service. The $75 is not a 'let's make a profit'
measure in our Library; it just covers the cost of the 3 bound
and 1 mfiche copies.

After looking at the costs per year recently, we realized that the
$8000 dollars the Library was shelling out for theses was better
put towards new books and journal resubscriptions. That's when we
changed the policy and asked the student to pay -- which so far
has not caused any complaints.

The Graduate School simply forwards all unbound theses to our Library.
We check them for accurate page numbers, contents, signatures, etc.,
and send the 3 copies for binding and 1 mfiche copy to the Canadian
Theses Service.

Hope this helps, Joe

All graduate students pay for the binding of their theses here. The
library keeps two copies; they may also order personal copies for
themselves at the same rate ($7 each).

Good Morning!

Here at SLU graduate students must pay for the binding of the thesis,
although the charge is less than what the Library actually pays the
bindery. The Library adds one copy of the thesis to the collection and the
Thesis Committee requires one to three copies for departmenal collections.
Since students generally want at least one copy bound for themselves, they
may submit up to seven copies. If the Thesis Committee requires additional
copies, we have allowed the student to bind additional copies. In all
cases the student is responsible for binding costs.

Hope this helps.
