CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT UNIVERSITY TECHNICAL SERVICES LIBRARIAN POSITION Christopher Newport University, a state institution of 4,500 students located in Virginia's Tidewater area, invites applications for Technical Services Librarian. The Captain John Smith Library houses over 340,000 volumes and is an active member of the Virtual Library of Virginia, a consortium of academic libraries providing a growing collection of bibliographic and full-text databases. All librarians participate in reference services, library instruction, and faculty liaison activities. Librarians may teach a one-credit course in research skills or Internet resources, and must be willing to work occasional weekends. Librarians have faculty rank and status, and must meet University requirements for tenure and promotion, including research, publication and service. Excellent benefits package is available. The library's web page may be viewed at http://www.cnu.edu/library/libhome.html Technical Services Librarian Responsible for the coordination and supervision of the cataloging, acquisitions, and serials functions of the library. Participates in the development of library goals, policies, and procedures; coordinates the work-flow of the department and oversees its daily operation. Responsible for original and complex copy cataloging of monographs, serials publications, audiovisuals and electronic resources. Responsible for the maintenance of the on-line catalog. Responsible for collection development and evaluation, and the purchase and processing of all library materials. Supervises one librarian, five support staff and several student assistants. The position reports to the University Librarian. Salary range is low to mid 30's. Required: ALA accredited MLS; progressively responsible experience in cataloging; supervisory experience as a department head; knowledge of cataloging procedures and resources, including AACR2, LCSH, OCLC and MARC formats; experience with automated library systems; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; planning, organizational and analytical abilities. Preferred: Second master's degree; experience in library acquisitions and collection development and evaluation; knowledge of serials functions in academic libraries; experience in reference and bibliographic instruction; experience with the VTLS system; experience in authority control; experience in cataloging a variety of formats including scores and media material; reading knowledge of a second language.
