Subject: use of PURL server

This question may be deemed rather technical, but bear with me. I would
like to hear from any of you who have used OCLC's PURL service and/or
installed a PURL server at your library using OCLC's freely available
software. Since a lot of the cataloging of Internet resources deals
with electronic journals, I thought it appropriate to pose the
question to this list, and I particularly want to hear from serials

What has your experience been with this? How have you solved the issue of
validating the "real" URL to which the PURL points? What issues are you
aware of with using this software? Does your library have an alternate
mechanism for keeping URLs in its cataloging records persistent? Or do
you not worry about this and just use the "real" URL in the 856?

Thanks for your feedback and advice.
