It is my experience that the distinction between professional and
popular or trade publications most often needs to be made at the
reference desk when the instructor has told students to use
"professional" journals without clearly defining them. I usually find
that actually showing examples is the most effective way of handling the
situation. Often there are new article as well as substantial articles
in the same publication, so the real point is to find a professional
"article" not just a professional journal.
