Subject: PubList.com and Ulrich's

Hello,

Recently, Jim Mumm and Anne Benham posted notes about similarities and
differences between PubList.com and Ulrich's. I thought they and other
readers of SERIALST would appreciate some additional information on the
differences between these two directories.

R.R. Bowker produces Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory in print,
CD-ROM, and online versions (on Dialog, SilverPlatter, Lexis-Nexis and
Ovid). Directory information, of up to 120 fields per title, is compiled
primarily from publisher-supplied data. There is no charge to publishers
for inclusion. The directory is a commercial product marketed primarily to
libraries, institutions and researchers worldwide. It will also be
available on the Web in early 1999.

PubList.com, The Internet Directory of Publications, is a Web-based
directory of publications that was launched in August 1998. It is produced
by Bowes & Associates Inc., a company located near Boston. PubList.com's
business model is similar to that of the Yellow Pages: the service is free
to users and publishers are charged for enhanced listings. Among other
benefits, PubList.com helps publishers reach wider user markets, in this
case, end-users rather than librarians. PubList.com supports links to
related services that are interested and willing to handle end-user
requests, such as document delivery and back issue supply. PubList.com
will be licensing data from other directories; however, currently its
primary data source is Ulrich's. PubList.com's license allows display of
only about a third of the data fields present in Ulrich's and for active
titles only. Many of the fields from Ulrich's that PubList.com may not
display are those of interest mostly to librarians, such as subscription
price, where a title is indexed, and refereed status. The PubList.com data
record is a composite of the most current information obtained from
multiple sources, including publishers.

We hope that librarians will encourage their users to try PubList.com's
easy-to-use online directory, so please feel free to share this message
with your colleagues in public services. Libraries are welcome to link to
the site from a library Web page. We love feedback, as the site is very new
and changes all the time as new information is added. For more information
about PubList.com, please visit: http://www.PubList.com, or contact me at:
oivins@publist.com.

Information about Ulrich's in all its formats is available at R.R. Bowker's
site located at http://www.bowker.com/catalog/home/entries/p25_c1.html.
Judy Salk, product manager for Ulrich's, would also be glad to hear from
you. Her email address is judy.salk@bowker.com

Thanks for your interest,

October Ivins
